1845 Painting of Septimia

Septimia was born in 1814 at Monticello. She was the seventh daughter of Martha Jefferson Randolph and Thomas Mann Randolph. Septimia was the youngest daughter, and her family often called her "Tim".

After the death of her grandfather, Thomas Jefferson, Septimia went with her mother to Boston, staying at the home of Ellen, her sister. She attended a day school, and learned to play the piano and guitar.

Later, Septimia lived with her sister Virginia, attending St. Mary’s school in Washington D.C. She traveled to Florida, Louisiana and Cuba visiting family and friends.

In 1838, Septimia married Dr. David Scott Meikleham. They lived in Cuba for eight years and then settled in New York City where Dr. Meikleham practiced medicine. They had four children.

In 1849, Septimia’s husband died of malaria. To support her family, Septimia opened a boarding house. She died in 1887.
