This is a portrait of Benjamin Rush, a delegate to the Continental Congress from Pennsylvania and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Trained as a physician, Rush became Surgeon-General of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. After independence, he was involved in many reform causes, including the anti-slavery movement.
