In this 1811 letter, Dr. Benjamin Rush of Philadelphia writes to John Adams about the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He recalled the tense, silent atmosphere atmosphere in the room in Philadelphia. Each delegate knew that signing the document made them traitors to England and might result in their own execution for treason.
