This painting depicts the members of the Continental Congress as they voted in Philadelphia on Richard Henry Lee’s motion for independence. The vote occurred on July 2, 1776. On July 4, 1776, the delegates voted to formally accept the Declaration of Independence as the formal statement of their cause made to America, Britain, and the rest of the world.
