Executor’s Sale

Sea of Liberty  |  document
Description

This newspaper notice announced the sale of Thomas Jefferson’s personal property in 1827. Because Jefferson owed roughly $110,000 when he died, his estate had to be sold to pay his debts. Household furnishings, farm equipment, and enslaved people were auctioned to family, neighbors, and strangers. In 1831, Monticello, too, was sold.
