This is a portrait George Mason, the main author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. Mason was the master of Gunston Hall, a plantation in northern Virginia. Like many Virginia planters of his generation, he was a slave owner who claimed to hate slavery. Nearly 110 slaves labored at Mason’s Gunston Hall in the 1780s.
