Description

George Washington wrote this letter to help a Virginia master reclaim a slave who escaped during a recent trip to Philadelphia. Anti-slavery Quakers protected the fugitive. Washington believed the Quakers acted illegally and warned that few people would visit Philadelphia if by doing so they risked losing their valuable human property.
