In 1789, President Washington wrote this letter to reassure worried Baptists that the U.S. government would not violate their hard-won right to religious liberty. In 1791, the adoption of the 1st Amendment to the Constitution addressed the concerns of Baptists and other religious minorities by mandating the separation of Church and State.
