This portrait depicts James Madison at the time he became the fourth President of the United States. Madison and Jefferson were friends and frequent collaborators. Working together during the 1790s to define the principles that would create the Democratic-Republican party, Madison served as Jefferson’s Secretary of State and then succeeded him as president.
