Jefferson to James Madison (Audio)

Sea of Liberty  |  audio

Description

This is a dramatic reading of a letter from Jefferson explaining to his friend James Madison why he supports the addition of a bill of rights to the U.S. Constitution. Madison, who had played a key role in drafting the Constitution, initially opposed the document. He believed that institutions were more effective than words in protecting individual rights. Jefferson’s arguments helped convince Madison to change his mind.
