This portrait of John Adams was painted while Adams was in London. After the American Revolution ended, Adams was appointed the first American ambassador to the Court of Saint James. A highly productive author, Adams is depicted with his law books and writing tools. When Thomas Jefferson visited, Adams gave him a copy of this portrait.
