This image was originally created by Benjamin Franklin prior to the Seven Years’ War. In the face of threats from the French and the American Indians, Franklin encouraged the colonists to unite together for their common defense. During the 1760s and 1770s, the image was re-circulated as a symbol of colonial resistance against Great Britain.
