Liberia’s crest portrays the West African republic as a haven for slaves and free blacks whose “love of liberty” led them across the ocean to live in peace as free farmers. Supported by the white-run American Colonization Society, nearly 20,000 African Americans–some free, some slave–settled in Liberia after 1820.
