The portrait is of the Marquis de Lafayette. Lafayette, depicted wearing the clothing of a French nobleman, arrived in America in 1777. He soon became a trusted confidant of George Washington and an outstanding battlefield commander. By 1789, when this portrait was painted, Lafayette had returned to France and begun to play a role in the French Revolution.
