Description

The 1780 Massachusetts constitution allowed religious toleration, but it also mandated tax-funded religious instruction by teachers who were Protestant. Unlike Jefferson and his colleagues in Virginia, Massachusetts leaders assumed that religion–specifically Protestant Christianity–made people good citizens.
