After the British burned the Washington in 1814, Thomas Jefferson offered to sell his books to Congress to rebuild the Library of Congress. Artist G. B. McIntosh imagines how Jefferson's study might have looked in 1815 as all of his books were being packed up to be shipped to Washington City.Pictured are Thomas Jefferson holding a book; enslaved butler Burwell Colbert in the back on the left and enslaved house servant Robert Colbert on the right; Jefferson's grandson Meriwether Lewis Randolph (age 5) peeks in from the side doorway; and Jefferson's pet mockingbird is seen flying overhead on the left.
