Completed in 1789, Philosophical Hall in Philadelphia was the home of the American Philosophical Society. Founded in 1743, the APS sought–in Franklin’s words–“to cultivate the finer arts, and improve the common stock of knowledge.” Its members included many influential men, including the first four U.S. presidents.
