This image, currently on display in the U.S. Capitol, depicts the surrender of the British after the battle of Yorktown in October 1781. Ironically, the defeated British general, Cornwallis, does not appear in the painting because he refused to appear in person for the surrender. This was the last major battle of the American Revolution.
