The American artist Rembrandt Peale painted this portrait of Jefferson in 1800, the year before he became president. Jefferson was fifty-seven years old. Peale was the son of Charles Willson Peale of Philadelphia, a successful artist and museum proprietor. Rembrandt Peale had two brothers and two sisters who were also artists.
