Description

This profile of Jefferson was made by the Frenchman Charles Févret de Saint-Mémin in 1804. During the French Revolution, Saint-Mémin and his family fled, first to Switzerland and then to the U.S. Though trained as a soldier, he earned his living during his exile by producing portraits of affluent Americans. Saint-Mémin returned to France in 1814.
