This image is the earliest known portrait of Jefferson.  An American artist painted it in London while Jefferson was serving as the U.S. minister to France immediately after the War for Independence. Jefferson’s rich diplomatic costume and powdered wig is much more elaborate than his simpler appearance in later portraits.
