This miniature portrait of Thomas Paine was painted by John Trumbull for Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was an admirer of Paine, whose pamphlet, Common Sense, helped promote popular sentiment for the cause of independence. Trumbull painted the likeness during the 1780s when all three men were living in Paris.
