U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights

Sea of Liberty  |  document
Description

The first ten amendments to the Constitution make up the Bill of Rights. Its first version, shown here, included twelve amendments, but the first two were dropped. When the Bill of Rights was adopted in 1791, the 1st Amendment protected religious freedom–and also free speech, a free press, and “the right of the people peaceably to assemble.”
