This photograph shows the building in Washington, D.C., where the Supreme Court of the United States has met since 1935. Before then, the court, like Congress, met in the Capitol. In 1929, however, its chief justice argued that the judiciary needed its own building because it was one of three independent branches of the U.S. government.
