This is an image of the desk on which Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson drew the design for the lap desk which he used when traveling. A Philadelphia cabinetmaker, Benjamin Randolph, made the desk out of mahogany to Jefferson’s specifications. In 1825, Jefferson gave the desk to his granddaughter Ellen and her husband.
