Reading Level: Elementary School

Thomas Jefferson Randolph was born in 1792 at Monticello. He was the oldest son of Martha Jefferson Randolph and Thomas Mann Randolph. He was named for his grandfather, Thomas Jefferson. His family called him "Jeff".

When he was fifteen years old, Jeff Randolph was sent to school in Philadelphia. He studied science and history.

Jeff helped his grandfather manage Monticello. But when his grandfather died, Jeff had to sell Monticello. He sold the house, the land and the enslaved workers to pay off a debt. Jeff described the sale as a "sad scene."

Jeff died in a carriage accident in 1875. He was eighty-three years old.
