Virginia Jefferson Randolph Trist, Jeffersons granddaughter

            In 1801, Virginia was born at Monticello. She was the sixth child of Martha Jefferson Randolph and Thomas Mann Randolph. Virginia spent much of her childhood at Monticello with her grandfather, Thomas Jefferson. Virginia wrote about her grandfather, "When he walked in the garden . . . He would gather fruit for us."

            Virginia married Nicholas Philip Trist, the grandson of one of Jefferson’s oldest friends. They were married at Monticello in 1824. They lived at Monticello where Nicholas studied law and worked as Jefferson’s secretary.

            The Trists moved to Washington D.C. and then to Cuba in 1834. They had three children. Virginia died in 1882.
