This report from a committee representing both houses of Congress paved the way for the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state, which preserved the balance in Congress. Slavery would be prohibited in the Louisiana Territory north of the 36° 30´ line. This agreement remained in force until the 1850s.
