Design for the Verso of the Great Seal of the United States

Description

This image became the basis for the Great Seal of the United States. In 1782 Congress adopted the designed created by Charles Thomson, a government official. The bald eagle, an American bird, holds an olive branch, representing peace, in one talon and a bundle of arrows, representing war, in the other. The Latin motto “E Pluribus Unum” means “Out of Many, One.”
