When he posed for this portrait, Frederick Douglass was one of the most well-known men in America. Douglass escaped slavery to become a leading abolitionist writer and orator. In one famous speech, he condemned American hypocrisy, asking “What to the slave is the 4th of July?” After emancipation, he continued to fight for civil rights.
