Description

This portrait of Phillis Wheatley was included in Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, published in London in 1773. Considered America’s first black poet, Wheatley wrote poems as a slave in Massachusetts. Her achievements gained international fame and spurred the early antislavery movement. She became a free woman in 1778 after her master’s death, and died in poverty in 1784.
