George III became king in 1760. This portrait depicts him in his coronation robes. His rich silks and ermine (white fur) were traditional royal clothes. The fact that he did not wear a crown or carry a scepter–both important symbols of kingly power–may have shown his respect for Britain’s limited constitutional monarchy.
