Description

This is a silhouette of John “Jack” Jouett. Early in the morning of June 4, 1780, Jouett arrived at Monticello to tell Thomas Jefferson, then the governor of Virginia, to evacuate the area in advance of the arrival of Col. Banastre Tarleton and the British cavalry. He also warned members of the Virginia legislature in Charlottesville to flee. All avoided capture thanks to his warnings.
