Description

In 1822, James Madison wrote this letter to Edward Livingston, who was compiling a legal code for Louisiana. The former president and chief author of the U.S. Constitution remained a strong believer in the separation of Church and State. Madison praised Livingston for including that principle in the laws of his state.
