In this letter to Albert Gallatin, Jefferson expressed his desire to recruit top European academics, particularly scientists, for his new university. When the University of Virginia held its first classes in 1825, it had eight faculty members—four Englishmen, one German, and three Americans. Gallatin was among the founders of New York University in 1831.
