This 1767 political cartoon warns Britain of the costs of enforcing its new taxation policies in North America. The cut up body suggests that the empire will be torn apart. The stationary ships in the background suggest that trade will come to a halt. The Latin phrase refers to an ancient Roman general who, according to legend, had his eyes plucked out and was forced to beg on the street.
