Description

In this diary entry, John Quincy Adams questioned the wisdom of the Missouri Compromise, which allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state. Adams had supported the compromise to in order to preserve the Union. Privately, however, he wondered whether it might have been better simply to forbid the spread of slavery farther into the West.
