This portrait by the American artist John Singleton Copley shows Samuel Adams pointing to the royal charter of the colony of Massachusetts in defense of its citizens’ rights. Adams was a brewer, merchant, and tax collector, as well as a patriot leader in Boston. He served in both the Massachusetts assembly and the First Continental Congress.
