In this letter, Federalist Timothy Pickering argued that the Louisiana Purchase was unconstitutional. Just as Jefferson previously criticized Federalists for acting unconstitutionally when they created the Bank of the United States, Pickering and other Federalists now condemned Democratic-Republicans for ignoring the Constitution.
