In this photograph, a man takes a sledge hammer to the Berlin Wall’s graffiti-filled west side. In 1961, Communist officials built the wall to prevent East Berliners from entering free West Berlin. In November 1989, as Communism declined, people on both sides attacked the wall. Together, they became citizens of a democratic and reunited Germany in 1990.
