This portrait shows William Clark, who, with Meriwether Lewis, explored the Louisiana Territory. It was painted in 1807, months after their expedition returned from the West. Clark was born in Virginia and grew up in Kentucky. He eventually settled in Missouri, where he served as territorial governor and then Superintendant of Indian Affairs.
